New US-Mediated Talks Proposed to End War in Ukraine

Kyiv – The United States has proposed a new round of talks next week aimed at ending the four-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Tuesday. The proposed negotiations, which would be mediated by Washington, come after two previous trilateral attempts failed to yield a breakthrough.
Zelenskyy, in an audio message to reporters, indicated the talks were initially planned for the United Arab Emirates but have been postponed by the U.S. side. He suggested potential locations for the meeting include Switzerland or Turkey.
“This was proposed by the American side, but we’ll see what happens in the Middle East, to be honest,” Zelenskyy said.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed the shift in timing, telling CNBC on Tuesday that the trilateral talks would likely be rescheduled for sometime next week, expressing continued optimism about the process.
The announcement follows a phone call between Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who offered to host the discussions. Erdoğan has maintained communication channels with both Kyiv and Moscow throughout the war, which began with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and invasion of the Donbas region in 2022, escalating into a full-scale invasion.
Zelenskyy also used the opportunity to urge Western nations not to ease sanctions imposed on Russia following the invasion, particularly those targeting Russian oil. He argued that lifting sanctions would signal acceptance of Russian aggression. The European Union has previously stated its opposition to removing oil sanctions in an effort to stabilize soaring energy prices, exacerbated by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his intention to seize the remainder of eastern Ukraine by force if negotiations fail to produce a resolution.
The proposed talks arrive at a complex moment, with the ongoing war in the Middle East potentially complicating efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement in Ukraine, as highlighted in a recent report by The Moscow Times. The interconnectedness of global conflicts underscores the urgency of finding a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine, a conflict that continues to have far-reaching consequences for European security and the global economy.
