Ukraine Strikes Deep Inside Russia, Escalating Energy War and EU Funding Dispute

ALMETYEVSK, Russia – Ukraine has demonstrated a growing capacity to strike deep within Russian territory, targeting a key oil pipeline facility and simultaneously escalating a dispute over European Union funding. The recent attacks on the Kaleykino pumping station, nearly 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine, have disrupted the flow of oil through the Druzhba (“Friendship”) pipeline, a vital artery supplying fuel to several European nations, including Hungary and Slovakia.

The strikes, confirmed by Ukrainian sources and observed through social media posts showing fires raging for days, represent a significant escalation in Ukraine’s war strategy. Kyiv has long targeted Russian energy infrastructure, mirroring Moscow’s attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, but this strike’s distance and impact are noteworthy. The Russian energy company operating the pipeline website was reportedly “down for maintenance” at the time of the attack.

The timing of the attack coincides with a political standoff within the European Union. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has blocked a proposed €90 billion ($106 billion) EU loan package for Ukraine, demanding the restoration of full oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline. Orbán publicly vowed not to support any measure favorable to Ukraine until his country’s oil flow is restored, according to letters sent to the European Council president.

This dispute stems from earlier Russian strikes on pumping stations along the Druzhba pipeline within Ukraine in late January, disrupting energy flows to Hungary and Slovakia. Some observers suggest Russia deliberately targeted the pipeline to create an energy crisis in Hungary ahead of upcoming elections, potentially destabilizing one of the Kremlin’s few remaining allies within the EU.

The situation highlights Ukraine’s increasingly complex battlefield, where it is fighting not only against Russia but also navigating political obstacles from within Europe and facing pressure from the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Ukraine is contending with what some describe as a “five-cornered struggle” that will shape the war’s fifth year.

While Hungary and Slovakia have exemptions allowing them to continue relying on Russian oil, the disruption to the Druzhba pipeline underscores the vulnerability of European energy supplies and the geopolitical leverage Ukraine now wields.

Ukraine’s developing long-range strike capabilities, including the use of drones and domestically produced weaponry like the Flamingo missile, are reducing its reliance on external support and allowing it to target critical infrastructure further afield. This evolving military capacity, coupled with a willingness to challenge both external and “internal enemies,” signals a shift in the dynamics of the conflict.

Despite facing threats for over four years, Ukraine has managed to retain control of approximately 80 percent of its territory and is demonstrating an increasing ability to inflict damage on its adversaries.
