Carney Government Announces Major Investment in Canada’s North, Citing Sovereignty and Defence

YELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday a multi-billion dollar investment in infrastructure and forward operating locations across Canada’s North, a move officials say is intended to bolster sovereignty and reinforce the country’s defence capabilities in the increasingly contested Arctic region.

The plan, detailed in a news release from the Prime Minister’s office, focuses on expanding the Canadian military’s presence and responsiveness in the Arctic and the North. It also aims to support local communities and contribute to NATO’s broader deterrence and defence strategies.

“These investments will continue to build the Defence team’s presence and responsiveness across the Arctic and the North,” Carney stated. “Reinforcing our ability to assert Canadian sovereignty, support community benefits where feasible, and contribute to NATO’s deterrence and defence priorities are key objectives.”

The announcement comes amid growing international interest in the Arctic, driven by climate change and the opening of new shipping routes. Canada shares Arctic territory with the United States (Alaska), Russia, Denmark (Greenland), and Norway.

The Prime Minister’s office has not yet released a detailed breakdown of the funding allocation, but indicated it will cover the construction of new facilities and the upgrading of existing infrastructure. The initiative also seeks to provide economic opportunities for northern communities.

Mark Carney became Canada’s Prime Minister in 2025, bringing an economist’s perspective to the role.
