India Launches Ambitious AI Summit Amid Logistical Challenges

New Delhi – India inaugurated its first major global Artificial Intelligence summit on Friday, positioning itself as a key player in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. The five-day India AI Impact Summit, hosted at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, aims to showcase practical AI applications across healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, under the theme of “People, Planet, Progress.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking ahead of the summit, emphasized the potential of AI to drive economic growth and create opportunities for India’s youth. “Data centres will be a massive job creator for our youth. We invite the whole world’s data to reside in India,” Modi declared, highlighting the nation’s expanding computing power and data infrastructure. He also shared his vision for the summit on X (formerly Twitter), stating the event reflects a “shared commitment to harnessing Artificial Intelligence for human-centric progress.”

The summit has drawn participation from over 600 startups and pavilions representing 13 countries, including Australia, Japan, Russia, and several European nations. High-profile tech leaders from OpenAI and Google are also in attendance, signaling the growing global interest in India’s AI ambitions. The event seeks to promote “sovereign AI models, democratized access, and scalable solutions,” according to organizers.

However, the summit’s launch was marred by significant logistical issues. Reports emerged of long queues, overcrowding, and confusion due to inadequate signage and limited seating. Attendees faced difficulties with entry procedures, including issues with digital QR codes and missing physical passes, hindering media coverage. Security sweeps also caused temporary evacuations and disruptions.

Despite the initial chaos, organizers pressed forward with keynotes, panels, and roundtable discussions. Sanjay Malhotra, a central banker, urged attendees to embrace AI, warning, “AI is happening, it is relentless, if you don’t do AI, AI will be done to you… Set a personal target of learning how to use three AI platforms within the next three months.”

The summit’s second day focuses on applied AI, social equity, and features discussions with UN representatives like Amandeep Singh Gill and Amitabh Kant of NITI Aayog, India’s policy think tank.

India’s push into AI comes at a critical time. Globally, the AI market is projected to reach $1.84 trillion by 2030, according to Statista, with significant implications for economic competitiveness and national security. The Indian government has identified AI as a strategic priority, investing in research and development and seeking to establish a robust regulatory framework.

The success of the India AI Impact Summit will be a key test of the country’s ability to translate ambition into action and establish itself as a leader in the next chapter of AI development. The event is expected to yield breakthroughs in collaboration and policy, shaping the future of AI not just for India, but for the Global South.
