Qatar Downs Iranian Jets, Intercepts Missiles in Escalating Tensions
Doha, Qatar – Qatari air defenses shot down two Iranian Su-24 fighter jets and intercepted seven ballistic missiles and five drones targeting the country on March 2, 2026, the Qatari Ministry of Defense announced. The incident marks a significant escalation in regional tensions and represents one of the most direct publicly acknowledged air defense engagements by Qatar in recent years.
According to an official statement released in Doha, the Qatar Emiri Air Force and naval air defense units successfully neutralized all incoming threats before they reached their intended targets, preventing any damage within the country.
“The Ministry of Defense of the State of Qatar announces that, thanks to Allah the Almighty first, and to the high level of readiness, and joint coordination among the relevant authorities, Qatar Emiri Air Force successfully shot down two (SU24) aircraft coming from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement read.
The Su-24, a Soviet-designed, twin-engine tactical strike aircraft, is typically used for low-altitude penetration and precision bombing missions.
Officials emphasized the swift and decisive response, stating the threat was addressed “immediately upon detection, in accordance with the operational plan, as all missiles were shot down before reaching their targets.” No casualties or damage were reported.
The Ministry of Defense underscored the readiness of Qatar’s armed forces, asserting they “possess full capabilities and resources to safeguard the state’s sovereignty and lands, and to respond firmly to any external threat.”
Authorities urged citizens, residents, and visitors to remain calm and rely on official information channels, cautioning against the spread of rumors.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened instability in the Middle East. While the specific catalyst for the Iranian aerial activity remains unclear, the response from Qatar demonstrates a firm commitment to defending its airspace and territorial integrity. The event is likely to further complicate diplomatic efforts in the region and raise concerns about potential further escalation.
