Perth Man Charged with Murder After One-Punch Attack Death
PERTH, Australia – A 37-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a 62-year-old man after an alleged one-punch assault in Perth’s central business district. The incident has reignited debate in Western Australia regarding laws surrounding violent assaults and public safety.
The victim was critically injured after being punched in the head around 8 p.m. on Friday night. He was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died on Monday.
Police initially arrested the suspect near the scene and charged him with aggravated robbery, aggravated grievous bodily harm, stealing, and fraud, alleging he had stolen a bank card and used it to make a purchase prior to the assault. Following the victim’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder. The man appeared in court on Sunday and remains in custody.
The case echoes recent concerns over one-punch attacks in the region, particularly following the death of Labor figure Tim Picton, whose alleged attacker was released on bail last week. That case also involved a charge of manslaughter.
One-punch laws in Western Australia carry a maximum penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment, or 25 years if the offender was intoxicated.
Western Australian Premier Roger Cook has indicated his government will review measures to improve safety during nighttime hours. “I think there’s more that we can do to look at the circumstances in which people disperse and end the evening to make that a safer process,” Cook stated.
Police continue to investigate the incident, reviewing CCTV footage to establish the full sequence of events.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as they become available.
