Pakistan Launches Strikes Inside Afghanistan, Sparking Condemnation and Vows of Retaliation

Kabul, Afghanistan – Pakistan conducted airstrikes early Sunday targeting militant hideouts within Afghanistan, a move that has ignited strong condemnation from the Afghan government and raised fears of escalating tensions along the volatile border region. The strikes come days after a suicide bombing in Pakistan, claimed by the Pakistani Taliban, left at least 17 people dead and six missing.

According to Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, the military carried out “intelligence-based, selective operations” against seven camps belonging to the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and affiliated groups, including an Islamic State affiliate. Tarar stated the operations were a necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of Pakistani citizens, while reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability.

However, the Afghan Defence Ministry denounced the strikes as a violation of its airspace and sovereignty. A statement released by the ministry indicated that “various civilian areas” in the provinces of Nangarhar and Paktika in eastern Afghanistan were hit, including a religious madrasa and multiple homes.

The human cost of the strikes is significant. Mawlawi Fazl Rahman Fayyaz, the provincial director of the Afghan Red Crescent Society in Nangarhar, reported at least 18 people were killed and several others wounded. Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid claimed “dozens” were killed and wounded, including women and children.

The strikes represent a significant escalation in tensions between the two neighboring countries, which have long accused each other of harboring militants. Pakistan has repeatedly urged the Taliban-led Afghan government to crack down on the TTP, which operates from Afghan territory. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently stated Islamabad was prepared to strike again should Kabul fail to address the issue.

Afghanistan has promised an “appropriate response” to the attacks, raising the prospect of further retaliatory measures. The incident underscores the complex security challenges facing the region and the potential for broader instability. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation.
