Ozempic: The Promise and Peril of a ‘Miracle’ Drug

By Jean-Pierre Dubois, International Editor

PARIS – What began as a treatment for type 2 diabetes has rapidly become a global phenomenon, sparking both hope and ethical debate. Ozempic, and a class of similar medications, are being hailed as breakthrough drugs for weight loss, but questions surrounding their long-term effects and accessibility are mounting.

The rise of these anti-obesity medications (AOMs) is striking. An estimated 6% of Americans are now prescribed them, according to Columbia Psychiatry, a figure that reflects a growing societal pressure to address weight and a willingness to explore pharmaceutical solutions.

Ozempic, chemically known as semaglutide, works by mimicking a natural hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar. Initially approved to help manage type 2 diabetes, it quickly gained off-label popularity for its significant weight loss effects. Other drugs in the same class, like Wegovy, have followed, specifically targeting obesity.

But the enthusiasm is tempered by uncertainty. While the immediate results can be dramatic, the long-term consequences of prolonged use remain largely unknown. Experts emphasize that Ozempic is intended as a long-term treatment if well-tolerated, requiring ongoing consultation between patient and healthcare provider. The decision on how long to continue treatment – whether for diabetes, weight loss, or to protect heart and kidney health – is a shared one.

This isn’t simply a medical question. The widespread demand for Ozempic has led to shortages, impacting those who rely on it for diabetes management. The ethical implications of prescribing a drug for cosmetic reasons when access is limited for those with genuine medical need are also being debated.

The situation highlights a broader challenge: the complex relationship between pharmaceuticals, societal expectations, and public health. As these “miracle” drugs continue to reshape conversations around weight and wellness, careful consideration of both their potential benefits and inherent risks is crucial.
