Australien pleads guilty to murder of wife, receives 20-year sentence
Werribee, Victoria, Australia – Jessie James Tumaliuan, a 42-year-old father of four, pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife, Czarina Gatbonton Tumaliuan, in the Victorian Supreme Court on Wednesday. He has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison. The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence and femicide, a global concern impacting communities worldwide.
Czarina Tumaliuan, a well-known entrepreneur who ran the popular online store Bellizzima, was found stabbed to death in the backyard of her Werribee home on March 27, 2025. The tragedy sparked immediate investigation by Victoria Police, and a subsequent court case that concluded with Tumaliuan’s guilty plea.
According to court documents, the couple had separated prior to the murder, but the husband continued to visit the family home. On the day of the incident, Tumaliuan entered the residence using a key, intending to confront his wife over financial matters. CCTV footage captured the escalating situation, including Ms. Tumaliuan’s desperate screams as she fled into the backyard. The audio abruptly ceased ten seconds later.
“She was defenceless and there were multiple stab wounds,” stated Chris Hooper, Tumaliuan’s barrister, during the proceedings. While acknowledging his client had armed himself with a knife, Hooper argued that Tumaliuan did not initially intend to kill his wife, but rather to inflict serious harm.
Prosecutor Nadia Kaddeche detailed that an initial assault occurred inside the home before Ms. Tumaliuan ran outside, calling for help.
Justice Amanda Fox indicated that a sentence of up to 26 years imprisonment would be imposed if Tumaliuan pleaded guilty. He accepted the indication and formally entered a guilty plea to one count of murder.
The case underscores the severity of domestic violence, a pervasive issue globally. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), approximately 45% of female homicides are committed by an intimate partner. Australia itself faces significant challenges in addressing domestic violence, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting that one in six women have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner since the age of 15.
The Victorian government has implemented various initiatives to combat domestic violence, including increased funding for support services and the introduction of new legislation aimed at protecting victims. However, advocates continue to call for more comprehensive and preventative measures.
Tumaliuan’s trial, originally scheduled for early February, has been vacated. He will return to court on March 13 for a pre-sentence hearing. The outcome of this case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the urgent need for continued efforts to protect vulnerable individuals.
