Man Shot Dead Attempting to Breach Mar-a-Lago, Trump Not Present

Palm Beach, Florida – A man armed with a shotgun and a fuel canister was fatally shot by law enforcement early Sunday morning after attempting to break into Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time, according to authorities.

The man, later identified as 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin, breached the property’s security perimeter before being confronted by two Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw stated that the agents and deputy ordered Martin to drop his weapons. He complied with the demand to drop the fuel canister, but then raised the shotgun, prompting the officers to open fire. Martin died at the scene.

“At that point in time, the deputy and the two Secret Service agents fired their weapons and neutralized the threat,” Bradshaw said.

Former President Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the incident. He was in Washington, D.C., delivering remarks at the White House Governors Dinner.

The Secret Service is investigating the incident, and the FBI is assisting. Agents have asked residents near Mar-a-Lago to review security camera footage. FBI Director Kash Patel stated the bureau is dedicating “all necessary resources” to the investigation.

Investigators have learned Martin had been reported missing by his family several days prior and believe he traveled south, acquiring the shotgun along the way. A box for the weapon was found in a vehicle at the scene.

The shooting is the latest in a series of security concerns involving Trump. In 2024, an assassination attempt occurred during a rally in Pennsylvania, and more recently, a man was arrested for allegedly aiming a rifle at Trump while he played golf in Florida.

Martin’s cousin, Braeden Fields, expressed shock, describing him as a quiet individual unfamiliar with firearms and raised in a family supportive of Trump. “He’s a good kid,” Fields said. “I wouldn’t believe he would do something like this. It’s mind-blowing.”

The incident prompted reactions from White House officials, with some criticizing Democrats for opposing a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Secret Service. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X, highlighting the Secret Service’s swift response and criticizing what she called a “reckless” decision by Democrats to potentially jeopardize their resources.
