Laura Lynch : 15 ans de prison pour le responsable de sa mort

Driver Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Crash That Killed Founding Member of The Chicks

Hudspeth County, Texas – The driver responsible for the 2023 death of Laura Lynch, a founding member of the band now known as The Chicks, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Domenick Chavez, 33, pleaded guilty as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, according to reports from the Office of El Paso County District Attorney James Montoya.

Lynch, 65, died in a head-on collision in Hudspeth County, approximately 70 miles east of El Paso, just days before Christmas in 2023. Chavez was attempting to pass four vehicles on a two-lane highway when the crash occurred, traveling at a speed between 106 and 114 miles per hour.

Lynch was trapped in her vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Chavez suffered non-life-threatening injuries after his truck caught fire upon impact.

District Attorney Montoya stated the death caused “profound sadness” for Lynch’s family, the Dell City community, and fans of her music. “Our office will continue to hold accountable those defendants who choose to drive in an extremely dangerous manner,” he said.

Chavez admitted to reckless driving as part of the plea agreement. While alcohol was not a factor in the crash, his driver’s license had been previously suspended due to two prior driving while intoxicated (DWI) convictions.

Lynch co-founded the Dixie Chicks in 1989, alongside Robin Lynn Macy and sisters Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Strayer. She shared lead vocal duties with Macy before becoming the sole lead singer and upright bassist in 1992. The band later changed its name to The Chicks in 2020.

Between 1990 and 1993, Lynch recorded three albums with the group: "Thank Heavens for Dale Evans," "Little Ol’ Cowgirl," and "Shouldn’t a Told You That." She left the band following a battle with anemia and was replaced by Natalie Maines.

The band members – Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines – released a statement following Lynch’s death, expressing their shock and sadness. They remembered Lynch’s “infectious energy and humor” and her contributions to the band’s early success.

“Laura was a bright light…her infectious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band,” the statement read. “Laura had a gift for design, a love of all things Texas and was instrumental in the early success of the band. Her undeniable talents helped propel us beyond busking on street corners to stages all across Texas and the mid-West.”

The band shared a reel on Instagram following Lynch’s passing.

This sentencing follows a similar case in 2023, where the driver who caused the fatal crash that killed Lynch was sentenced to 15 years in prison, highlighting the severe consequences for reckless driving.
