Kuwait Receives Regional Support Amid Maritime Dispute, Passes Digital Commerce Law

KUWAIT CITY – Kuwait is bolstering its digital economy while simultaneously receiving strong regional backing as it navigates a maritime dispute with Iraq. The country’s Emir issued a decree on Monday enacting a new law regulating digital commerce, aiming to balance innovation with consumer protection and transparency.

The law, numbered 10 of 2026, seeks to modernize Kuwait’s commercial framework in line with global trends. Details of the specific regulations were not immediately available.

Simultaneously, Kuwait is seeing a wave of support from neighboring Gulf states. The United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its “full and steadfast solidarity” with Kuwait in protecting its legitimate rights and interests, particularly concerning its maritime zones. The UAE pledged to stand with Kuwait against any infringement on its sovereignty, according to a statement released Monday.

Qatar echoed this sentiment, affirming its support for Kuwait’s “full sovereignty” over its maritime areas and fixed, established waterways in relation to Iraq. Bahrain followed suit, issuing a firm rejection of any attempt to undermine Kuwait’s sovereignty in the same maritime areas.

These statements come after Iraq submitted coordinates to the United Nations that Kuwait claims impinge upon its sovereignty.

On the international stage, Kuwait’s Permanent Delegate to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Nasser Al-Hain, emphasized the country’s commitment to strengthening the central role of the UN Human Rights Council.

Elsewhere, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency in anticipation of a major snowstorm expected to hit the U.S. Northeast. In Mexico, the government announced the death of Nemesio Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the New Generation Jalisco Cartel, during a military operation in the western state of Jalisco.
