Mob Justice Kills Boda Boda Rider During Political Rally in Kenya, Sparking Investigation
Mbale, Vihiga County, Kenya – Kenyan authorities are investigating the death of a motorcycle taxi operator, George Olande Otobe, following a mob justice incident that occurred during a period of heightened political activity. The incident, which took place on February 21, 2026, in Mbale Town, Vihiga County, has raised concerns about security at political gatherings and the potential for violence.
Otobe, also known as Omundu, died from severe head injuries after being attacked by a crowd following a confrontation with another man, Hussein Hassan. Preliminary investigations indicate Otobe allegedly stabbed Hassan in the head, triggering the retaliatory assault. A knife was recovered at the scene.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed a postmortem examination conducted on February 16, 2026, determined Otobe’s cause of death to be multiple severe head injuries consistent with mob violence. His body was initially taken to Vihiga County Referral Hospital mortuary and later transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for preservation.
The killing occurred near the venue of a Linda Mwananchi political rally in the nearby Kakamega region, prompting the DCI to issue a warning about the arming of supporters at political events.
“While the Constitution guarantees every person the right, peaceably and unarmed, to assemble, to demonstrate, and to present petitions to public authorities, this right is explicitly conditioned on participants remaining peaceful and unarmed,” the DCI stated. The agency emphasized that introducing weapons into political events poses a serious threat to public safety.
The DCI commended security officers for exercising restraint during the volatile situation, preventing further escalation. Authorities have appealed to the public for information to help identify those involved in the killing and to understand the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Otobe was a resident of Kisumu County and worked as a boda boda rider, according to identification documents. The DCI has vowed to prosecute all individuals involved in the mob killing, as well as anyone found responsible for arming supporters or inciting violence.
The incident underscores growing national concerns about mob justice and security at political rallies as Kenya’s political landscape becomes increasingly active. The DCI affirmed its commitment to upholding justice, maintaining public safety, and protecting the rights of all citizens.
