Stratton Wins Illinois Democratic Senate Primary, Setting Stage for Potential Historic Win

CHICAGO – Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, NBC News projects, marking a significant victory in a closely watched primary race to succeed retiring Sen. Dick Durbin. Stratton’s win positions her as the frontrunner in a state reliably Democratic, and potentially on track to become the sixth Black woman in the Senate.

Stratton defeated U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly in the primary, fueled by a late surge and a key endorsement from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. Pritzker’s support, along with that of Senator Tammy Duckworth, proved crucial, as did significant financial backing from the Illinois Future PAC, which spent nearly $15 million on ads supporting Stratton and criticizing Krishnamoorthi.

The race was marked by a substantial financial disparity. While Krishnamoorthi invested $29 million in his campaign, Stratton operated with a comparatively modest $1.1 million. Kelly’s campaign spent $1.4 million. Despite being outspent, Stratton resonated with voters by presenting herself as a progressive voice willing to challenge the status quo in Washington.

“What I’ve heard from people very clearly is that they are fed up with what’s happening in Washington,” Stratton said in a recent interview with NBC News. “They are frustrated and angry…and they’re looking for a fighter.”

Stratton’s campaign focused on issues like Medicare for All, a $25 minimum wage, and abolishing ICE, aligning herself with the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party. She distinguished herself from her opponents by openly criticizing President Donald Trump and vowing to be a strong check on his administration. She also stated she would not support Senator Chuck Schumer for continued leadership of the Democratic caucus.

The primary also saw outside spending, including nearly $10 million in attacks against Stratton from Fairshake, a group funded by cryptocurrency executives, potentially linked to new crypto regulations signed into law by Pritzker last year. Stratton is also endorsed by Senator Elizabeth Warren, a proponent of crypto regulation.

If elected, Stratton would be part of a historic moment, joining a potential group of three Black women serving simultaneously in the Senate. She is expected to face former Illinois Republican Party Chairman Don Tracy in the November general election. Given Illinois’s strong Democratic lean – former Vice President Kamala Harris won the state by 11 percentage points in 2024 – Stratton is considered well-positioned for victory.

The outcome of this primary signals a potential shift within the Illinois Democratic Party and reflects a growing appetite for more progressive leadership in the Senate.
