Israeli Strike Wounds British Journalist in Southern Lebanon

Beirut, Lebanon – British journalist Steve Sweeney was injured Wednesday by shrapnel from an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon while reporting live on air, according to multiple reports. Sweeney, a correspondent for Russia Today (RT), was with his cameraman, Ali Rida, at the time of the incident.

The attack occurred amidst escalating tensions in the region. Lebanon’s health ministry has reported that Israeli attacks have resulted in over 1,000 fatalities.

Footage of the moment the missile landed near Sweeney circulated widely online, prompting concern from media organizations and calls for journalist safety. Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of RT, posted on X about the incident.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has also reported on the incident, highlighting the dangers faced by journalists covering the conflict.

Details regarding the extent of Sweeney and Rida’s injuries remain limited. Sweeney is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

This incident underscores the increasing risks to journalists operating in conflict zones, particularly in areas experiencing heightened military activity. The ongoing conflict raises serious concerns about press freedom and the ability of journalists to report safely and accurately.
