Nvidia’s CEO Visits China Amid Anticipation of H200 Chip Imports

Shanghai, China – Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has begun a tour of China, starting with a visit to the company’s Shanghai office, as Beijing is widely expected to authorize imports of Nvidia’s H200 artificial intelligence chips. The trip, a recurring event for Huang around the Lunar New Year, comes at a pivotal moment for the tech giant and the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Huang met with Nvidia staff in Shanghai on Friday to review 2025 milestones and discuss the company’s product roadmap, according to a report by Tencent Holdings’ news portal. While the H200 chip wasn’t specifically mentioned in the discussion, the timing of the visit strongly suggests it’s a key focus of Huang’s trip. A photograph circulating online, published by Tencent, appears to show Huang surrounded by employees outside the Shanghai office.

The H200, Nvidia’s second most powerful AI chip, has been awaiting regulatory approval in China despite Washington recently granting an export license, subject to a 25% fee. This approval is crucial as China represents a significant market for AI development, and access to advanced chips like the H200 is vital for its domestic tech companies. The previous temporary import ban had created uncertainty and spurred some Chinese AI developers to seek chips through unofficial channels, as highlighted by Reuters.

This visit underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the AI industry. The United States has been increasingly cautious about exporting advanced technologies to China, citing national security concerns. However, the approval of H200 exports, even with the added fee, signals a willingness to maintain some level of engagement.

“The H200 is a critical component for advancing AI capabilities, and its availability in China will undoubtedly impact the global AI race,” says Dr. Li Wei, a technology analyst at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. “China’s AI ambitions are substantial, and access to cutting-edge hardware is essential for achieving those goals.”

Huang is scheduled to visit Nvidia offices in Beijing and Shenzhen in the coming weeks, continuing a tradition he’s maintained over the past two years to connect with employees and partners during the Lunar New Year celebrations, which begin in mid-February.

Nvidia did not respond to a request for comment sent outside of business hours on Saturday.

The global AI chip market is projected to reach $400 billion by 2027, according to a recent report by market research firm Gartner. China is expected to account for a significant portion of this growth, making the H200’s availability a matter of considerable economic and strategic importance. The outcome of Huang’s visit and Beijing’s final decision on imports will be closely watched by the tech industry and governments worldwide.
