Iran Strikes Multiple Gulf States, Escalating Regional Tensions

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran launched a widespread barrage of missile and drone attacks targeting multiple countries across the Persian Gulf region on Saturday, drawing swift and forceful condemnation from Saudi Arabia and other nations. The attacks, which reportedly struck civilian areas, represent a significant escalation in regional tensions and raise fears of a wider conflict.

At least five fatalities have been confirmed, with one worker killed in an attack on the Fairmont The Palm, a luxury hotel in Dubai. Fires ignited in various locations, including a residential complex in Bahrain, according to reports.

Saudi Arabia issued a strong statement, describing the attacks as “treacherous Iranian aggression” and warning of “grave consequences.” The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed full solidarity with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan, all of which were targeted. Explosions were also reported in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.

“This is a blatant violation of the sovereignty of several nations,” the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Qatar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry similarly condemned the attacks as a “flagrant violation” of its national sovereignty and a “direct infringement” on its security. The ministry affirmed Qatar’s right to respond in accordance with international law. Jordan’s King Abdullah II also denounced the attacks as a violation of international law.

Lebanon, while not directly targeted, expressed solidarity with the affected Arab states, condemning any threat to their security.

The attacks come amid a backdrop of regional instability, following a joint military operation by the United States and Israel involving Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Syria – an operation referred to as “Operation Epic Fury.”

Oman, also not targeted, was among the only nations in the region to criticize the US and Israel’s operation, warning it could lead to an expanding conflict.

While many of the Iranian ballistic missiles were intercepted by Arab state air defenses, the scale and breadth of the attacks have prompted widespread concern. Saudi air defenses reportedly intercepted projectiles aimed at its capital, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi.

Saudi Arabia called on the international community to condemn Iran’s actions and “confront Iranian violations that undermine the security and stability of the region.”

The United Arab Emirates stated it was at “full readiness and preparedness to deal with any threats” and would take “all necessary measures to protect its territory and people.” At least three waves of ballistic missile and drone attacks hit the UAE, according to reports.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as regional and international actors respond to this escalating crisis.
