Island in Canada Named for Prince Andrew Faces Renaming Following Arrest
OTONABEE RIVER, Ontario – An island in Canada named in honour of Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is set to be renamed following his recent arrest, officials say. The move comes amid growing scrutiny of the former Duke of York and his ties to public spaces.
Selwyn Township council has directed staff to begin the formal process of renaming ‘Prince Andrew Island,’ located on the Otonabee River in Ontario, near Gordonstoun Island. The decision was made after Andrew’s arrest on Thursday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office. He was released under investigation 11 hours later, following raids at his Norfolk and Windsor homes.
“Selwyn Council has directed staff to explore the formal process required to rename Prince Andrew and Gordonstoun islands that are located in Selwyn Township,” said Mayor Sherry Senis.
The renaming process is expected to take several months and will require an application to the Ontario Geographic Naming Board, according to the Express. Local Ojibwa community, Curve Lake First Nation, will be consulted on potential new names for the island next week.
The calls for renaming extend beyond the small island. Prince Andrew spent six months in Canada in 1977, attending Lakefield College School in Ontario, less than 2km from the island. He served as a trustee and honorary chair of the school’s foundation for several years, roles he has since relinquished.
Several roads in Canada also bear Prince Andrew’s name, including Prince Andrew Drive in Caledon, Ontario. The Town of Caledon has stated it will review the road name, though any changes would require a formal review process and public feedback.
The arrest of Prince Andrew, who has been stripped of his royal titles and privileges, has sparked renewed debate about his public associations. He has denied all allegations against him.
Details of Andrew’s 66th birthday have also emerged, revealing he spent a significant portion of the day in police custody. Reports indicate he was offered a cup of Yorkshire Tea while being detained at Aylsham Police Investigation Centre.
