German-Made Strike Drones See Increased Use in Ukraine, Targeting Russian Rear Areas

KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian forces are increasingly deploying German-made HX-2 strike drones to target Russian positions and logistical support units, according to recent reports and confirmed by visual evidence. The drones, manufactured by German defense technology company Helsing, are being used to strike targets in Russian-controlled territory, impacting repair crews and infrastructure, Ukrainian sources say.

The HX-2, publicly introduced at the end of 2024, is designed for precision strikes against armored vehicles, artillery, and military infrastructure at ranges up to 100 kilometers. Its X-shaped wing configuration is intended to enhance stability during attacks.

Reports from Ukrainian defense outlet Militarnyi detail the HX-2’s deployment across multiple frontline sectors, focusing on rear areas rather than direct combat formations. Russian military personnel have acknowledged the strikes on social media, with reports of drones hitting “repair brigades and road network installation crews.” Images circulating online appear to show debris identified as components of the HX-2 drone.

Helsing has a contract to manufacture up to 6,000 HX-2 drones for Ukraine, signaling a planned large-scale deployment. The drones weigh approximately 12 kilograms, are powered by four electric motors, and can reach speeds of up to 220 kilometers per hour. They carry a warhead weighing several kilograms, designed for targeted engagements.

However, recent developments indicate a pause in further orders. Both Ukraine and Germany have suspended additional HX-2 orders following technical issues identified during field trials, as reported in January. Helsing cautioned that the data set from Ukraine is limited, noting only a “low double-digit” number of drones have been extensively tested in the field.

The increased use of these drones highlights Ukraine’s continued reliance on Western military aid and the evolving nature of the conflict, which is increasingly focused on disrupting Russian logistics and support networks.
