Gwagwalada Council Chief Pledges to Avert Health Worker Strikes
GWAGWALADA, Nigeria – The newly elected chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Comrade Kasim Mohammed Ikwa, has vowed to prioritize industrial harmony with health workers to prevent disruptions in healthcare services. Ikwa made the pledge following a congratulatory visit from the Gwagwalada branch of the Medical and Health Workers Union on Friday.
Ikwa, a former union leader himself, stated he is acutely aware of the challenges faced by those in the health sector and intends to make it a key focus of his administration. He highlighted dilapidated health centers as a significant issue observed during his campaign across the council’s ten wards, promising swift action to address them upon taking office.
The union’s branch chairman, who led the delegation, emphasized critical issues plaguing the council’s health sector, including a shortage of personnel, inadequate facilities, and the poor condition of health centers, particularly in rural communities.
Ikwa’s commitment comes as access to healthcare remains a pressing concern globally. According to the World Health Organization, a sufficient and well-trained health workforce is crucial for achieving universal health coverage. Nigeria, like many developing nations, faces significant hurdles in ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
The chairman-elect’s pledge signals a potential shift towards proactive engagement with health workers, aiming to address systemic issues before they escalate into industrial action. This approach could serve as a model for other local governments in Nigeria striving to improve healthcare delivery.
