UK Prepares for Potential Mass Evacuation of Citizens from Gulf Amid Iran Tensions

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The United Kingdom is actively preparing for the possible mass evacuation of approximately 300,000 citizens from Gulf countries, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper revealed Tuesday. The move comes as tensions escalate in the region following recent attacks linked to Iran, prompting concerns for the safety of British nationals.

Cooper stated that the UK is working on “every possible option” to protect its citizens, including those on holiday, transit passengers, business travelers, and residents. Approximately 94,000 individuals have already registered their presence in the region through a government system established to monitor and assist citizens. However, officials estimate the total number of British nationals currently in Gulf countries targeted by Iran reaches around 300,000.

“That is, of course, extremely stressful for people,” Cooper told Sky News. “We are setting up the support systems…to make sure that citizens can get support.”

The Foreign Secretary emphasized the importance of following local advice, which currently focuses on sheltering in place. Rapid deployment teams are being dispatched to the region to collaborate with the travel industry and local governments to facilitate assistance and potential evacuation efforts.

While airspace closures in some areas are complicating travel, the UK government is prioritizing the safe return of its citizens. Cooper affirmed, “Of course, we want people to get safely home as swiftly as possible.”

The situation is unfolding against a backdrop of heightened regional instability. The Guardian reported Tuesday that the UK is pushing back against suggestions it is being drawn into an Iraq-style conflict.

British citizens in the Gulf are advised to stay informed and heed the guidance of local authorities. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has resources available for those seeking assistance or information regarding travel and safety in the region.
