Dubai’s Global Village Cancels Eid Al Fitr Fireworks Amid Regional Tensions
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Global Village, Dubai’s popular cultural and entertainment destination, has cancelled its traditional Eid Al Fitr fireworks displays this year as the attraction remains closed due to heightened regional security concerns. The decision, announced earlier this week, impacts celebrations expected to begin around March 19, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.
The cancellation follows directives from UAE authorities restricting fireworks and drone shows as a precautionary measure linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The broader closure of Global Village, which has been shut for over two weeks, reflects a wider reassessment of public events across the Gulf region.
Organizers confirmed all planned Eid Al Fitr fireworks and drone shows are off, disappointing residents and tourists who typically flock to the venue for the spectacular displays. Global Village, known for its pavilions representing over 90 countries, street food, and cultural performances, usually draws millions of visitors each season.
The move comes amid reports of intercepted ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran, prompting governments in the region to prioritize safety. Several other major attractions in the UAE, including Dubai Parks and Resorts and Ain Dubai, have also temporarily closed as authorities evaluate security conditions.
While the cancellation marks a departure from past Eid celebrations, officials emphasize that public safety remains the top priority. Global Village has advised visitors to monitor its official website and social media channels for updates regarding reopening and potential changes to scheduled events.
The decision underscores the impact of ongoing regional conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran on everyday life and public gatherings in the Gulf. The UAE’s proactive measures reflect a broader trend of heightened vigilance across the region.
