France Heightens Security Alert Following Iran Strikes
PARIS — French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has ordered increased vigilance across the country, particularly around Iranian opposition groups, U.S. and Israeli interests, and potential strategic targets, following recent airstrikes in Iran. The directive, issued Wednesday to regional prefects and security officials, underscores growing concerns about potential retaliatory actions and spillover effects from the escalating regional tensions.
Nuñez’s telegram, reported by Agence France-Presse, specifically calls for heightened protection of Jewish community sites – described as “particularly sensitive targets” – and various Iranian opposition groups operating within France. Existing security measures protecting U.S. and Israeli interests have also been reinforced.
The alert extends beyond these specific groups, encompassing a broader call for vigilance under France’s Vigipirate plan. This includes increased security around public transportation, large gatherings, places of worship, tourist destinations, shopping centers, healthcare facilities, schools, government buildings, and other locations deemed strategically important.
The deployment of France’s Sentinelle operation – a military force deployed to protect sensitive sites – has been bolstered as a result of the heightened threat level. Nuñez is scheduled to convene a video conference Thursday with regional defense and security prefects to discuss the situation further.
The Interior Minister also urged authorities to report any indications of planned violence or attempts at interference by the Iranian regime to judicial authorities and intelligence services.
This move comes amid a period of increased international concern following recent military actions targeting Iranian soil. While French officials have not specified the nature of the perceived threats, the directive signals a proactive approach to safeguarding national security and protecting vulnerable communities within France.
