Iconic Land Rover to be Retired from British Army Service After 70 Years
Bovington, Dorset – After seven decades as a mainstay of British military transport, the Land Rover is being phased out of service with the British Army. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced the retirement of the iconic vehicle, with thousands set to be removed from active duty over the coming months.
The move marks a significant shift for the Army, signaling a move towards a more modern light mobility fleet. A competition to identify a replacement vehicle has already been launched, with the first new vehicles expected to be in service by 2030.
Since their widespread adoption in the 1950s, Land Rovers have been integral to British military operations, serving in a diverse range of roles. As recently as 2025, over 5,000 Land Rovers were still in service across the UK military, highlighting the scale of the ongoing transition.
“The Land Rover and British Army share an incredible history and the image of a Landy in Army livery is truly iconic,” said Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard. He described the vehicle as a “trusted workhorse” for the British Armed Forces.
The Land Rover’s versatility has been key to its longevity. The MoD highlighted numerous military-specific variants developed over the years, including the Series IIA Ambulance, capable of carrying four stretchers, and the Series IIA Pink Panther, a desert-configured vehicle utilized by the Special Air Service (SAS) for reconnaissance missions. Experimental models like the Amphibious SIIA 109 and the V8 Centaur Multi-Role Half-Track further demonstrate the platform’s adaptability.
While the retirement is underway, the MoD emphasized a managed approach, aligning the phase-out with Army demand to ensure continued operational capabilities. A commemorative event held Thursday in Bovington, Dorset, underscored the Land Rover’s legacy and marked the beginning of the Army’s transition.
The Land Rover has been used for personnel transport, equipment carriage, patrols, and providing flexible transport where larger vehicles are unsuitable. The MoD stated the Army is now focused on equipping personnel with a “modern, technologically advanced fleet to support future operations.”
The launch of the replacement vehicle competition signifies more than just a symbolic farewell. It represents a formal process to secure a new generation of light vehicles for the British Army, ensuring continued mobility and support for future missions.
