Spain Prepares Economic Measures to Shield Consumers From Rising Energy Costs Amid Middle East Conflict

Madrid, Spain – The Spanish government is preparing a package of fiscal measures aimed at mitigating the impact of rising fuel and electricity prices stemming from the escalating conflict in the Middle East, Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo announced Thursday. The move comes as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil and gas shipments, continues to disrupt energy markets.

The crisis, triggered by the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28th, has already seen diesel prices in Spain surge by more than 20 percent, impacting key sectors like agriculture and road transport. The government is drawing lessons from the 2022 energy crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, believing similar fiscal tools can provide relief.

“There is broad consensus regarding the positive effect on price containment and inflation they had,” Cuerpo told reporters following meetings with union and business leaders. “These will be the tools we will work with.”

While acknowledging the challenges, Cuerpo emphasized that Spain is better positioned to weather this storm than in 2022, when inflation exceeded 10 percent. A significant investment in renewable energy sources – now accounting for around 55 percent of Spain’s energy mix – and diversified import sources, primarily from the Americas and Africa, are providing a buffer.

Spain, the fourth-largest economy in the European Union, has experienced robust growth in recent years, fueled by domestic consumption, tourism, and exports. The government aims to finalize and approve the new economic measures “in the coming days,” prioritizing aid for sectors most vulnerable to rising energy costs.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is being closely monitored internationally, with governments scrambling to address potential disruptions to global oil supplies. The waterway’s closure represents a significant test of strength between the U.S. and Iran, according to analysts.
