Italian Skier Elena Curtoni Triumphs in Val di Fassa Super-G
Val di Fassa, Italy – Elena Curtoni of Italy secured a thrilling victory in the women’s Super-G race in Val di Fassa on Sunday, marking her fourth World Cup triumph. The 35-year-old completed the course in 1 minute, 29.07 seconds, adding to a successful showing for the Italian team following Laura Pirovano’s downhill wins.
The win comes after a challenging period for Curtoni, who suffered a serious injury – a fractured sacrum – following a fall in 2023. “The last few years have been very tough, but today I managed to do what I wanted,” Curtoni said after the race, as reported by ANSA. “I believed in it, but when you can’t achieve the result, doubts start to creep in. Now, however, I am very happy.”
Adding to the Italian celebration, Asja Zenere achieved her first career podium finish, securing third place with bib number 33. Pirovano finished eighth, Sofia Goggia ninth, and Roberta Melesi twelfth, demonstrating the strength of the Italian squad on home snow.
Norwegian skier Lie Kajsa Vickhoff finished second. New Zealand’s Alice Robinson placed fourth, continuing her pursuit of Goggia in the Super-G standings. Goggia currently leads with 449 points, while Robinson trails with 386, setting up a decisive final race in Lillehammer on March 22nd for the season title.
The women’s World Cup circuit will next move to Åre, Sweden, for a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom special on Sunday.
Curtoni expressed her gratitude for the support she’s received, while also acknowledging her independent spirit. “I need confirmations and support, but I’m someone who does things on my own,” she stated. “I’ve spent the whole season trying to enjoy each race, and now I’m going to the finals in Lillehammer on a track that I like.”
