Egypt Boosts Renewable Energy, Secures Fuel Supplies Amid Regional Tensions

Cairo – Egypt is moving to bolster its energy security with plans to add 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the national grid before next summer, according to a statement released by the presidency following a high-level meeting led by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. The move comes as the country navigates ongoing regional tensions and their impact on global energy prices.

The meeting, attended by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity Mahmoud Esmat, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi, focused on ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply. Discussions centered on securing adequate fuel supplies for power generation and coordinating efforts between state entities.

President Al-Sisi emphasized the importance of maintaining strategic reserves of petroleum products to safeguard fuel supplies, describing energy security as a cornerstone of national security. The government is also working to settle outstanding payments owed to foreign energy companies and attract further investment into the sector.

Minister Badawi outlined plans to modernize and upgrade existing oil refineries to increase output and reduce fuel import costs. Egypt is also preparing to host the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPS 2026) in Cairo from March 30 to April 1, 2026.

Beyond domestic production, Egypt is expanding regional energy cooperation. A recently signed memorandum of understanding with Libya aims to broaden collaboration in oil, natural gas, and mining, encompassing exploration, refinery upgrades, energy transportation, and petrochemical development.

The government has directed efforts towards accelerating the settlement of dues to foreign partners and continuing to develop infrastructure for receiving liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, including the deployment of regasification vessels. These steps are intended to boost domestic production and ensure a consistent energy supply for both electricity generation and vital industries.

Prime Minister Madbouly’s government, which recently saw its resignation tendered to President El-Sisi, has been tasked with forming a new cabinet to continue pursuing these energy goals, according to a separate presidential statement.
