Chinese Military Resumes Flights Near Taiwan After Unusual Pause

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Chinese military aircraft have resumed large-scale activity near Taiwan, ending a ten-day period of unusual calm, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry. The renewed flights come after a lull that sparked speculation about a potential shift in Beijing’s strategy towards the self-governed island.

The recent activity mirrors patterns observed earlier this year, with Taiwan reporting a significant increase in Chinese warplanes entering its air defense identification zone. Previously, a similar level of activity – 30 aircraft – was reported on February 25th.

China views Taiwan as a renegade province and has vowed to annex it, by force if necessary. For years, Beijing has maintained a consistent military presence near Taiwan, regularly sending warplanes and naval vessels in a show of force. While Taiwan’s military had previously indicated it wasn’t altering its defense posture during the recent decrease in Chinese activity, the resumption of flights underscores the ongoing tensions in the region.

The reasons behind the ten-day pause remain unclear. However, analysts suggest it could have been due to internal factors within the Chinese military or a deliberate attempt to create uncertainty.

The increased military activity is closely monitored by international observers, as it raises concerns about potential miscalculations and escalation. The United States, a key ally of Taiwan, has repeatedly urged China to exercise restraint and maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
