Carney rencontre Charles III à Londres

Carney to Meet with King Charles Amidst Domestic and International Concerns

LONDON – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to meet with King Charles III in London on March 16, marking the third encounter between the two leaders since Carney assumed office a year ago. The meeting comes as Carney embarks on an international trip encompassing both the United Kingdom and Norway, and as his government faces scrutiny over its handling of both domestic and global challenges.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the audience with King Charles is part of Carney’s visit. Their previous meetings include an initial audience in London in March 2025 and a visit by King Charles to Canada in May of last year, during which the monarch delivered the speech from the throne – a historic first for a British monarch in decades. That moment carried significant weight, occurring against the backdrop of trade tensions with the United States and questions surrounding Canadian sovereignty.

During a recent visit to Canada, King Charles reportedly expressed concern regarding potential separation movements within Alberta, following a meeting with leaders of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations. When questioned about whether he would address this issue with the King, Carney emphasized the monarch’s deep interest in the rights of Indigenous peoples, noting Charles had already engaged in “a fulsome discussion” with Treaty Six chiefs.

“His Majesty, in all my experience, takes an intense interest in the rights of Indigenous peoples,” Carney stated during an event in Yellowknife. “I don’t want to prejudge the discussion that we have.”

Beyond the meeting with King Charles, Carney is also scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. His trip began with a visit to Norway to observe NATO’s Cold Response exercises and participate in a Nordic-Canada Council summit.

The timing of Carney’s trip and a planned vacation in Europe following the UK visit have drawn questions from reporters, particularly given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and other pressing domestic issues. Carney defended his schedule, asserting his continued accessibility and connection to critical matters. He also highlighted the strength of his cabinet and his commitment to empowering his ministers to address key challenges.

“I will be as visible as needed and as connected as always,” Carney said. “I would reinforce that one of the strengths of this government is we have a very strong cabinet.”
