Man Detained in Spain Following Death of Partner in Suspected Domestic Violence
Pedreña, Cantabria, Spain – A 52-year-old man is in custody following the death of his 64-year-old partner in Pedreña, Cantabria, authorities announced Sunday. The Guardia Civil are investigating the case as a potential instance of gender-based violence.
According to a statement from the Government Delegation in Cantabria, police were alerted by the man himself, who reported finding his partner deceased at their home on Saturday. An autopsy conducted Sunday indicated the woman’s death was the result of violent causes, leading to the man’s arrest.
While no prior complaints of domestic violence had been filed between the couple, investigators have learned the suspect has a history of prior incidents involving violence against other women.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence in Spain. Around 1,200 victims of gender-based violence receive support annually through centers in Cantabria, according to reporting by El Diario.
Information regarding the incident has been forwarded to the Ministry of Equality in Spain. The Guardia Civil’s Organic Unit of Judicial Police is leading the investigation.
