Belarus Releases 250 Prisoners in Deal with U.S., Signaling Shift in Relations

MINSK, Belarus – Belarus has released 250 political prisoners, a move described as a “significant humanitarian milestone” by a U.S. official, in exchange for the lifting of sanctions on several Belarusian companies. The release, the largest in years, follows negotiations between the Belarusian government and the United States and represents a notable development in the isolated nation’s efforts to improve ties with the West.

Among those freed Thursday were prominent human rights activists Valentin Stefanovich, Marfa Rabkova, and Anastasiya Loika, according to the Belarusian rights group Viasna. However, hundreds of political prisoners remain incarcerated in Belarus, many arrested following the disputed 2020 presidential election and subsequent protests.

The prisoner release came hours after U.S. envoy John Coale met with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk. Coale announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the United States would remove sanctions from several Belarusian banks, fertilizer producers, and the Finance Ministry as part of the agreement.

“Today’s release of 250 individuals is a testament to the President’s commitment to direct, hard-nosed diplomacy,” Coale wrote. He also expressed gratitude to Lithuania for its role in the mission and indicated that Lukashenko may visit the United States.

U.S. President Donald Trump has actively sought to build ties with Belarus, a close ally of Russia, since taking office, easing sanctions and inviting the country into his “Board of Peace.” Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, is described by critics as the leader of Europe’s last dictatorship. The 2020 election, which secured Lukashenko another term, was widely condemned by the opposition as fraudulent.

Opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya welcomed the release as a positive step, stating that the efforts were “saving lives,” but urged the release of all remaining political prisoners.

The West had previously imposed heavy sanctions on Belarus due to its support for the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and its crackdown on protesters in 2020. This deal signals a potential shift in the international community’s approach to the country.
