Benidorm Avoids Insolvency with €350 Million Settlement

BENIDORM, Spain (AP) — The popular Spanish resort city of Benidorm has secured a €350 million (approximately $375 million USD) compensation plan to avert financial collapse, officials announced this week. The agreement stems from a two-decade-long legal dispute with a local family over a land deal.

The city, a magnet for British tourists, particularly, faced potential insolvency due to a Valencian Supreme Court ruling ordering the payout to the Murcia Puchades family. The family had agreed to transfer land to the city in the early 2000s in exchange for development plots, but local officials failed to uphold their end of the bargain, prompting legal action.

Benidorm will make an initial payment of €60 million (approximately $65 million USD) before the end of the year, with the full amount to be repaid over 12 years at an interest rate of around 3.5%. Mayor Toni Pérez stated the city will be able to meet its obligations “without falling into ruin” and without increasing taxes or cutting essential services.

The financial strain threatened to impact vital tourist services, including beach maintenance and public safety, potentially damaging the city’s appeal.

Benidorm’s reliance on tourism, particularly from the United Kingdom, is significant. In 2024, the city welcomed 900,000 British visitors. Recent data from HOSBEC, the Hotel and Tourism Business Association of the Valencian Community, shows that in 2025, UK travelers accounted for 42.5% of all hotel stays in Benidorm, surpassing domestic Spanish visitors who comprised 38.6% of the total. HOSBEC has described the UK market as the “undisputed leader” for Benidorm’s hotel sector.

The situation in Benidorm reflects broader tensions surrounding tourism in Spain, with protests occurring in other popular destinations like Barcelona, Malaga, and the Balearic and Canary Islands, as reported recently. [1]
