Armée américaine : Appel d’offres pour mécanisme de mortier 60mm M225

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Army is gauging industry capacity to supply a key component for its 60mm mortar systems, a move signaling continued investment in close-range fire support for ground troops. A “Sources Sought Notice” published February 20, 2026, by the Army Contracting Command–Detroit Arsenal, seeks information from manufacturers regarding the production of a firing mechanism used in the M225 and M225A1 mortar systems.

The Army’s inquiry isn’t a solicitation for bids, but rather a market research effort to understand the current industrial base and potential supply chain vulnerabilities. Responses will inform future acquisition planning and ensure the sustained availability of critical parts, officials said. The deadline for responses is March 9, 2026.

The component in question, identified as firing mechanism gun (part number 12901984), is essential for initiating the firing sequence of the mortar. The Army estimates a need for 55 units annually over a two-year period, suggesting ongoing maintenance and replacement requirements within active units.

The M225A1, a lightweight 60mm mortar, is a staple for U.S. infantry, providing indirect fire support in scenarios where heavier artillery isn’t practical. The system’s portability allows for rapid deployment and maneuverability, enabling troops to engage targets without direct line of sight. The original M224 mortar system, deployed extensively in Afghanistan, shares similar capabilities. The M224A1 is 21% lighter than its predecessor while maintaining the same range and barrel life, according to Army documentation.

The Army is seeking responses from both large and small businesses registered under NAICS code 332994 – small arms, ordnance, and ordnance accessories manufacturing. Access to the technical data package for the firing mechanism is restricted to the U.S. Department of War and authorized defense contractors with a valid DD Form 2345 certification, a security measure to protect sensitive military information.

First article testing will be required to verify manufacturing quality before any production deliveries are approved. Companies responding to the survey are asked to provide details on production lead times, capacity, quality control certifications, and past government contract performance.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and uncompensated, and the Army is under no obligation to issue a contract as a result. However, the move underscores the importance of maintaining a robust domestic supply chain for essential military equipment.
