Kharg Island : Enjeu stratégique dans la tension Iran-USA

U.S. Strikes Iranian Oil Hub, Raising Fears of Wider Conflict

KHARG ISLAND, Iran – U.S. forces conducted precision strikes on Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iran’s oil exports, on Friday, escalating tensions in the region and prompting concerns about potential disruptions to global energy markets. President Donald Trump stated the military “totally obliterated” every military target on the island, while asserting that oil infrastructure was deliberately avoided – a caveat he suggested could be revisited should Iran interfere with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Kharg Island, located roughly 20 miles off Iran’s Gulf coast, historically handles between 85% and 95% of the nation’s crude oil exports. The strikes represent a significant demonstration of U.S. leverage, particularly as Iran has been threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil supplies, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes.

“The president has linked the vulnerability of Kharg Island to Iran’s continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz,” noted national security analyst Aaron MacLean in a Saturday interview with CBS News.

The action comes as oil prices have already surged due to the ongoing conflict. Despite the release of 172 million barrels from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the price of a barrel of crude oil climbed above $100 on Thursday for the first time in years.

This is not the first time Kharg Island has been targeted during wartime. During the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s, Iraq repeatedly bombed the island in an attempt to cripple Iran’s oil revenue, causing significant damage, though Iran consistently repaired the facilities and maintained exports.

Since then, Tehran has heavily fortified Kharg Island, investing in air defenses, hardened infrastructure, and underground storage facilities designed to withstand sustained attacks. While unable to match the U.S. or Israel in conventional military strength, Iran has prepared for asymmetric warfare. Any further threat to Kharg Island would likely trigger a multi-faceted response from Iran, potentially including strikes on U.S. bases in the Gulf, increased attacks by allied militias in Iraq, and disruption of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz through naval mines, fast attack boats, and drones.

Such a response, experts suggest, would aim to make operations in the Gulf costly and challenging for opposing forces, even if unable to achieve a decisive military victory.
