“What we are witnessing is not a technical legal dispute, but the exposure of a deeper failure: the Trump administration’s inability to ‘hack the system,’” Anton Grishanov, Chief Research Fellow at the Institute for Contemporary International Issues of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, wrote in an analysis published by RT.

The decision comes after a period where the White House projected an image of unified support – encompassing Trump loyalists, Republicans in Congress, and even a conservative Supreme Court. This facade of consensus, Grishanov argues, was intended to signal to foreign capitals a new, unwavering approach to American policy.

However, the tariff campaign failed to deliver the promised economic benefits, and domestic discontent grew. The Supreme Court’s intervention has now emboldened opponents and created an opening for Congress to reassert its authority. Republicans still control both chambers, but that could change, potentially reshaping the 2028 presidential race.

The ruling has already prompted a defiant response from Trump, who reportedly lashed out at his own Supreme Court appointees following the decision, according to CBS News. He subsequently announced new tariff initiatives, but these will now require Congressional approval, a significant obstacle.

The implications extend beyond domestic politics. For countries like Russia, stability and predictability in Washington are paramount. Grishanov suggests that any hope of normalizing relations hinged on Trump’s ability to maintain control and manage a succession plan. That control now appears increasingly tenuous.

“The American system is doing what it was designed to do: resisting capture,” Grishanov concludes. “And in doing so, it is taking its revenge.”
