Billionaire Philanthropist Leslie Wexner Faces Renewed Scrutiny Over Ties to Jeffrey Epstein
WASHINGTON – Leslie Wexner, the Ohio billionaire and founder of L Brands, is once again under intense scrutiny following the release of previously redacted documents related to the criminal case of Jeffrey Epstein. The renewed attention comes as Wexner prepares for a closed-door deposition before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on February 18th.
The newly released files, made public under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, reveal that the FBI identified Wexner as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in investigative documents drafted after Epstein’s death in 2019. While the files acknowledge “limited evidence” against Wexner, his name’s appearance has sparked a fresh wave of questions about the extent of their decades-long relationship.
Wexner, 88, has not been charged with any crime in connection with Epstein’s sex trafficking offenses and has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activity. Justice Department officials have emphasized that being named in the files does not equate to guilt.
The association between Wexner and Epstein dates back to the late 1980s, when Wexner hired Epstein as a financial advisor. Epstein was later granted power of attorney in 1991, a privilege he allegedly used for personal transactions. A 2008 settlement saw Epstein pay Wexner $100 million following accusations of theft or misappropriation of funds – a detail only recently confirmed in the released documents. Wexner had publicly accused Epstein of theft prior to his death.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the scale of Epstein’s crimes and the high-profile individuals connected to him. Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to state charges of soliciting prostitution from a minor, but a controversial non-prosecution agreement shielded him from federal charges. His death in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges fueled conspiracy theories and intensified calls for transparency.
Beyond the legal implications, the Wexner-Epstein connection has created a complex situation within the Jewish community. Wexner’s foundation has been a major benefactor, funding Jewish education, institutions, and a prestigious fellowship program that has trained generations of Jewish leaders. However, the association with Epstein has prompted some recipients of Wexner’s philanthropy to grapple with ethical concerns. At least two rabbis have publicly pledged to donate to sex trafficking victims as a way to offset benefits received from Wexner’s foundation.
U.S. Representative Ro Khanna brought the issue to the forefront on Tuesday, publicly naming Wexner as one of six individuals whose identities were previously redacted from the “Epstein Files.” Khanna’s statement on the House floor underscored the public interest in understanding the full scope of Epstein’s network and the potential involvement of powerful figures.
The upcoming deposition is expected to provide further insight into the nature of Wexner’s relationship with Epstein. However, the closed-door nature of the hearing and the uncertainty surrounding the release of the transcript raise concerns about transparency. The Committee’s decision on whether to make the transcript public will likely determine how much information is ultimately revealed to the public.
