Ukraine Destroys Russian Helicopter, Strikes Black Sea Platform in Nighttime Operation
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian naval and special operations forces conducted a nighttime strike on a Russian-occupied drilling platform in the Black Sea on March 5, destroying a Kamov Ka-27 helicopter and inflicting personnel losses, Ukrainian officials said. The operation targeted the Syvash platform, located at the Holitsynske gas field, which Ukraine asserts Russia had been using as a key surveillance and communications hub.
According to the Ukrainian Navy, the Syvash platform had been converted into a forward operating position used to coordinate drone strikes targeting infrastructure in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions of southern Ukraine. The platform also housed electronic warfare equipment and short-range air defense systems, posing a threat to civilian shipping.
“By the forces and means of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine together with units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, enemy units located on the ‘Syvash’ drilling platform… were struck,” the Ukrainian Navy stated.
The attack involved a combination of maritime unmanned surface drones and aerial drones, successfully striking command and communication equipment. During the operation, a Russian Ka-27 helicopter attempting to land on the platform was also destroyed.
The Kamov Ka-27 is a versatile helicopter commonly used by Russian naval aviation for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, reconnaissance, and logistical support. Its coaxial rotor system allows it to operate from confined spaces, making offshore platforms viable landing zones.
This is not the first instance of Russia repurposing Black Sea drilling platforms for military use since the start of the full-scale invasion. Ukrainian officials say Russia has been installing radar and communications systems on these structures to extend surveillance coverage over the Black Sea and the approaches to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.
The destruction of the Ka-27 and the strike on the Syvash platform represent a continued Ukrainian effort to disrupt Russian military logistics and capabilities in the Black Sea, a strategically important area for both countries. The ongoing conflict in the region has raised concerns about maritime security and the potential for escalation.
