Trump Predicts Imminent Change in Cuba, Hints at Potential Intervention

WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that Cuba is on the brink of collapse, suggesting a potential shift in U.S. policy toward the island nation. Speaking recently, Trump indicated that negotiations are underway between Cuban officials and his administration, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the talks.

“Cuba is going to fall pretty soon,” Trump told CNN on Friday, adding that a resolution could be “a friendly takeover, or maybe not.” He characterized the Cuban government as desperate, citing economic hardship and a lack of resources. “They have no energy, no money. They are in serious humanitarian trouble,” Trump stated.

The former president emphasized the importance of the Cuban-American community, noting their significant influence and support. He claimed that the current Cuban regime “was very bad to a lot of people” and previously relied on support from Venezuela, a lifeline that has now been cut off. “They used to get the money from Venezuela and the oil. But they don’t have money from Venezuela anymore. They don’t have oil. They don’t have anything,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments come as his administration pursued a policy of tightening the economic embargo against Cuba, particularly regarding energy supplies. He suggested that Cuba is now seeking a deal to avoid further economic strain. “They are negotiating with Marco, with me, and with some others,” he said. “And I think a deal could be made very easily with Cuba.”

The former president also linked the situation in Cuba to broader U.S. foreign policy goals, stating, “These situations in Venezuela and Cuba should make clear the new doctrine: we will not allow hostile foreign influence to take hold in this hemisphere.”

While focusing on Iran as a current priority, Trump reiterated his belief that a resolution with Cuba is within reach. He framed the potential outcome as a positive one, envisioning “a new, great life” for Cuba, but insisted the current system is “in its last moments.”

This rhetoric echoes statements made at the Summit of the Americas in 2026, where Trump declared Cuba “really at the end of the road.”
