Trump Calls on Australia to Offer Asylum to Iranian Women’s Soccer Team
GOLD COAST, Australia – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly urged Australia to grant asylum to members of the Iranian women’s national soccer team, offering the U.S. as an alternative refuge. The call comes amid reports that several players have sought protection from Australian authorities, fearing retribution upon their return to Iran.
The team has been at the center of controversy during their participation in the Women’s Asian Cup in Australia. Following their decision not to sing the Iranian national anthem before their opening match, Iranian state television labeled the players “traitors.” While the team subsequently sang and saluted the anthem in later games, questions arose regarding potential coercion.
“Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iran National Woman’s Soccer team to be forced back to Iran, where they will most likely be killed. Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister, give ASYLUM,” Trump posted on his social media platform Monday. He added, “The U.S. will take them if you won’t.”
Reports indicate that at least five players have left their hotel in Gold Coast and are receiving assistance from Australian police, with expectations they will apply for asylum.
The situation highlights the complex geopolitical ramifications facing athletes from Iran, particularly in the context of ongoing political tensions. Craig Foster, a former captain of the Australian men’s soccer team and a human rights advocate, emphasized the players’ difficult position. “Most of them have families back home, some of them have children back home, and even if offered the right to remain in Australia, if they feel unsafe, many of them may not accept that opportunity,” Foster told BBC News. “What’s most important is that that offer is made.”
Australian authorities have not yet confirmed whether any players have formally applied for asylum. The case underscores the growing international concern for the safety and well-being of Iranian citizens, particularly women, amid increasing political unrest.
