HBO’s critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic drama, “The Last of Us,” is gearing up for a third season with significant casting additions and a narrative shift, according to recent announcements. The series, which has captivated audiences worldwide, is aiming for a 2027 premiere.

The upcoming season marks a change in the creative leadership, with Neil Druckmann, co-creator and director of the original video game, stepping back to focus on projects with Naughty Dog, the game’s developer. Druckmann previously collaborated with Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s “Chernobyl,” for the first two seasons. Mazin will continue to lead the show, though the extent of his creative freedom with the adaptation of the remaining “The Last of Us: Part II” storyline remains to be seen.

A key change for Season 3 will be a shift in perspective, moving away from the central character of Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, to focus on Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. This transition has already led to supporting characters from Abby’s storyline – Mel (Tati Gabrielle), Nora (Ariella Barer), and Owen (Spencer Lord) – being promoted to series regulars after appearing in guest roles during the second season.

Adding star power to the cast is Patrick Wilson, known for his roles in “The Conjuring” and “Aquaman” franchises. Wilson will portray Jerry, Abby’s father, a character central to her motivations. Newcomer Jerry Ritter (“Matlock”) also joins the cast as Hanley, a soldier. Ritter previously appeared in the first season as one of the infected.

The series will continue to feature Ramsey and Dever alongside Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright. However, Pedro Pascal, who starred as Joel in the first season, is not expected to return.

“The Last of Us” has garnered significant attention for its compelling narrative and high production values. The show’s success underscores the growing popularity of video game adaptations and their potential to resonate with a broad audience. The series’ exploration of themes like survival, morality, and human connection in a dystopian setting continues to draw viewers and critical acclaim.

The original report on these casting updates appeared in The Hollywood Reporter.
