Air Canada Crash at LaGuardia Claims Two Pilots, Sparks Safety Concerns
New York – A late-night collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Sunday resulted in the deaths of two Air Canada pilots and injuries to dozens of passengers and crew, prompting investigations into potential air traffic control missteps and renewed scrutiny of the U.S. aviation system.
Antoine Forest, 30, has been identified by family as one of the pilots killed in the crash. He worked for Jazz Aviation, operating regional flights under the Air Canada Express brand, and was piloting Flight 8646 from Montreal when the aircraft struck a fire truck on the runway.
According to officials, both the Air Canada Express CRJ-900 aircraft and the emergency vehicle had received clearance from air traffic control, inadvertently setting them on a collision course. The plane, carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, impacted the truck during landing.
“These were two young men at the start of their careers so it’s an absolute tragedy,” said Bryan Bedford, administrator of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Air Line Pilots Association echoed this sentiment, calling the deaths a “profound tragedy” and praising the pilots’ dedication to passenger safety.
Approximately 40 people were transported to local hospitals, most with minor injuries, with many discharged by Monday morning. However, some individuals, including Port Authority personnel responding to the incident, sustained serious injuries.
The crash sparked a chaotic scene, with explosions from equipment inside the aircraft adding to the confusion. Images from the airport showed significant damage to the plane.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the FAA have launched a full investigation. Preliminary evidence, including air traffic control audio, suggests confusion over runway clearance may have been a contributing factor. Experts indicate that communication between controllers and ground vehicles will be a key area of focus. Aviation specialists note that such incidents typically stem from a combination of factors.
The incident also led to the temporary shutdown of LaGuardia Airport, causing widespread flight cancellations and delays.
The crash comes amid existing concerns about the U.S. aviation system, including reported staffing shortages among air traffic controllers and broader safety issues. The incident is likely to intensify calls for increased investment in air traffic control infrastructure and personnel.
