Man Arrested After Brutal Assault Leaves Homeless Person in Critical Condition in Girona, Spain

Girona, Spain – A 26-year-old man is in custody following a violent attack on a homeless man in Girona, Spain, on Sunday morning. The victim is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

The assault occurred around 8:00 AM on Passeig d’Olot, a street connecting Girona to the neighboring city of Salt, according to Catalan police sources who spoke with Diari de Girona. Police responded to reports of the attack while the assailant was still actively assaulting the victim.

Autoroute espagnole AP-7 rouvre partiellement après un mois de fermeture suite à un accident ferroviaire mortel

MARTORELL, Espagne – Un tronçon de l’autoroute AP-7 en Catalogne, dans le nord-est de l’Espagne, a rouvert lundi à 3 heures du matin, après deux semaines de fermeture complète et un mois de perturbations du trafic suite à un accident ferroviaire mortel et à l’effondrement d’une portion de la voie ferrée adjacente. La réouverture, annoncée par le Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), concerne la direction sud, vers Tarragone, et s’effectue avec une vitesse maximale de 120 km/h sur trois voies.

La fermeture initiale de l’autoroute, survenue après la mort d’un apprenti conducteur de train le 20 janvier, visait à permettre la sécurisation et la réparation du talus instable qui avait cédé, compromettant à la fois la ligne ferroviaire et l’autoroute. Un premier carril avait été rouvert brièvement le 24 janvier, avant d’être à nouveau fermé pour des travaux plus approfondis.

Ramon Lamiel, directeur du SCT, a justifié l’heure de réouverture par le choix d’une “heure creuse” afin de gérer au mieux le trafic “important” attendu sur ce tronçon. Les automobilistes reprendront également le paiement des péages sur la C-32, une autoroute alternative, à partir de minuit lundi au mardi.

L’incident a eu un impact significatif sur le réseau routier catalan. Selon le SCT, le trafic sur la C-32 a doublé pendant la période de fermeture de l’AP-7, et a même triplé pour les poids lourds, témoignant d’une adaptation rapide des flux de marchandises. Le trafic sur l’autoroute A-2 a également augmenté, tandis que celui de la B-23 a, de manière surprenante, diminué, suggérant que certains automobilistes ont préféré la C-32 malgré son coût.

Malgré les perturbations, les autorités catalanes ont souligné une baisse de la mortalité routière dans la région au cours des premières semaines de l’année. Train Collision in Spain Injures Dozens, Prompts Suspension of Regional Rail Service

GELIDA, Spain – One person died and at least 35 others were injured Tuesday afternoon when a regional train collided with debris that had fallen onto the tracks near Barcelona, Spain. A coordination center involving railway authorities will convene Wednesday morning, around 9:30 a.m., to analyze the results of these inspections. “The service will not be resumed until it is safe to do so,” Paneque emphasized. Reinforcements via road transport are being planned to mitigate disruption.

The incident is under judicial investigation, with a judge from the Vilafranca del Penedès court overseeing the collection of evidence and the recovery of the deceased.

The Catalan Fire Service has responded to over 1,200 calls, particularly in the Girona province, where the downpours have led to school closures, road closures, river overflows, and hazardous sea conditions. Earlier Tuesday, a man died after his car was swept away by floodwaters.
