Tragedy in Russia: Bodies of Three Children Recovered from Moscow River
ZVENIGOROD, Russia – Eleven days after they disappeared during a walk, the bodies of three children have been recovered from the Moscow River, Russian authorities confirmed Tuesday. The children – 12-year-old boys Bogdan and Ivan, and 13-year-old Alina – fell through ice near the town of Zvenigorod, approximately 37 miles east of Moscow, on March 7.
The recovery marks the end of a large-scale search operation that involved over 150 volunteers and rescue specialists. While authorities had indicated early in the search that the children were believed to have drowned, the confirmation brings a somber close to a case that gripped the nation.
The first body, that of a boy, was found last Wednesday, followed by the second boy’s body on Friday. Alina’s body was recovered Tuesday, prompting the Emergency Situations Ministry to officially conclude the search.
“This is an irreplaceable loss. It’s hard to accept and comprehend such a tragedy,” said Andrei Ivanov, head of the Odintsovo district, expressing condolences and pledging support to the families.
The Investigative Committee, Russia’s primary investigative body, launched a criminal probe into the children’s disappearance last week. As of Tuesday, the committee has not released any further statements regarding the investigation.
The incident underscores the dangers of venturing onto frozen bodies of water, particularly during fluctuating temperatures. While no specific details regarding the ice conditions at the time of the incident have been released, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with winter recreation.
The Moscow Times initially reported on the disappearance and subsequent recovery efforts.
