SAA et CemAir : Nouvel accord de codeshare en Afrique du Sud

South African Airways Expands Domestic Reach with CemAir Codeshare Agreement

JOHANNESBURG – South African Airways (SAA) is bolstering its domestic network through a new codeshare agreement with privately-owned regional airline CemAir, a move aimed at improving connectivity across South Africa and catering to both business and leisure travelers. The partnership, announced Monday, will allow passengers to access a wider range of destinations within the country, particularly regional hubs not currently served by SAA’s direct routes.

This agreement marks a strategic shift for SAA, which has historically focused its codeshare partnerships on international and regional flights. Unlike those arrangements, this collaboration is exclusively focused on domestic operations, signaling a renewed commitment to the South African travel market.

Under the terms of the agreement, both airlines will share code on select flights, allowing customers to book seamless itineraries through their respective websites, mobile apps, and travel agents. Passengers will benefit from single-ticket bookings and through-checked baggage, streamlining the travel experience.

“This partnership is focused on connecting major cities with regional and leisure destinations that were previously beyond SAA’s footprint,” explained SAA Group Chief Executive Officer, Prof. John Lamola. “By combining our strengths with CemAir, we are offering greater flexibility, convenience and choice to our customers.”

CemAir, established in 2005, currently operates scheduled services connecting major urban centers like Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg with key regional destinations including George, East London, Gqeberha, Margate, Kimberley, Hoedspruit and Mala Mala. The airline utilizes a fleet of regional jets and turboprop aircraft, well-suited for serving these routes.

Miles van der Molen, CemAir’s Chief Executive Officer, echoed Lamola’s sentiment, stating the collaboration will create a more connected domestic network. “This benefits both business and leisure travellers, providing expanded access and smoother connections,” he said.

The South African tourism sector, a significant contributor to the nation’s GDP – accounting for approximately 3.7% in 2022 according to Statistics South Africa – has faced challenges in recent years, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial difficulties of SAA. This codeshare agreement is viewed by industry analysts as a positive step towards revitalizing domestic tourism and supporting economic recovery. The South African government has repeatedly emphasized the importance of a robust aviation sector for economic growth and job creation.

Ticket sales for flights under the codeshare agreement are scheduled to begin on January 26, 2026. The partnership represents a significant development in South Africa’s aviation landscape, promising increased travel options and improved connectivity for passengers across the country.
