Putin Seen Exploiting Iran-U.S. Conflict, UK Defence Secretary Says

LONDON – As the conflict between Iran and the United States escalates, the United Kingdom’s Defence Secretary John Healey has asserted that Russia’s Vladimir Putin is likely leveraging the situation to his advantage, potentially aiding Iran’s military capabilities and benefiting from soaring oil prices. The assessment comes after Iranian-linked drones struck a base in Iraq housing some British troops, though no injuries were reported.

Healey indicated a discernible pattern in Iranian tactics mirroring Russian military strategies employed during the war in Ukraine. “No one will be surprised to believe that Putin’s hidden hand is behind some of the Iranian tactics, potentially some of their capabilities as well,” he stated during a visit to the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters.

The shift in tactics includes a change in how Iran utilizes its drones, a capability honed through a prior relationship with Russia. Tehran supplied Moscow with thousands of “Shahed” drones in the early stages of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to military assessments, Russia has since developed its own version of the unmanned aerial vehicle, and the lessons learned in Ukraine appear to be informing Iran’s response to U.S. and Israeli strikes.

Lieutenant General Nick Perry, the chief of joint operations overseeing UK military operations globally, confirmed a “definitive” link between Russia and Iran, citing a long-standing military relationship. He noted that Iranian drone tactics have demonstrably changed, with drones now being flown at lower altitudes to increase effectiveness.

Beyond the military implications, Healey highlighted the economic benefits Putin stands to gain from the instability. The conflict has driven up global oil prices, a boon for Russia’s economy. “The one world leader benefitting from the sky high oil prices at the moment is Putin,” he said.

The situation is further complicated by recent attacks across the Middle East attributed to Iranian forces. British forces in Iraq reportedly shot down two drones targeting a military base in Erbil overnight, with some impacts registered on the camp. While no British personnel were harmed, reports indicate several U.S. casualties, none of which were serious.

The UK is investigating components recovered from a drone that landed near a hangar at a Royal Air Force base in Cyprus to determine if they include Russian-made parts.

The developments underscore a complex geopolitical landscape where existing conflicts are intersecting and potentially exacerbating regional instability. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing monitoring of Iranian tactics and potential Russian involvement.
