Koyasan, Japon – 4 Juillet 2024 – patrick Paul O’Neil, un enseignant et passionné de cultures, est décédé le 3 juillet à l’âge de 60 ans, suite à un anévrisme cérébral. Né en 1965,il a vécu et enseigné au Japon,trouvant une communauté chaleureuse à Koyasan. Patrick Paul O’Neil (1965-2025)
Patrick Paul O’Neil was born on March 16, 1965, in laramie, Wyoming, to Patrick Stephen and Diane (Veren) O’Neil. His birth declaration playfully stated “March 17th, St. Patrick’s day, Dublin Time.” He joined his sisters, Mari and Tara.
The family soon moved to Mandan, north Dakota, where Pat grew up. He graduated high school and moved to California to pursue his education. Following in his mother Diane’s footsteps, he became a teacher, also dedicating time to martial arts and yoga. One of Pat’s greatest joys was teaching yoga to incarcerated youth.
pat then chose to live in Japan, where he continued teaching and practicing martial arts. Eventually, he settled in Koyasan, finding a home and a marvelous community. He spent his time studying at the Buddhist temple, working at the tourism center, leading nature walks and meditation sessions, and teaching English to all ages – with children being his favorite students. He led many lessons on American holidays, supported by supplies sent by Tara and Mari.
For 20 years, Koyasan was Pat’s home. While he didn’t find romantic love, he loved deeply in this world: nature, plants, insects, photography, meditation, travel, hiking, teaching, and always learning.
pat always had a corny joke ready, enjoyed playing his guitar, loved stimulating political discussions from all angles, and talked to everyone. He was fluent in japanese and had a working knowledge of several othre languages. he cherished a good conversation, anywhere, anytime, and always greeted the world with a wide smile, bringing joy to everything he encountered.
patrick Paul passed away on July 3rd from a brain aneurysm. He was guided on his next journey in a Buddhist funeral on July 10th in Koyasan. He is survived by Mari O’Neil McCullough (Marshall), Connor (Beth) McCullough, Finn McCullough, Shane (dana Nielsen), Tara O’Neil (Kevin Zanoth), Ian (Nicki) Thompson, Tori Thompson (Zach Zimmer), and his beloved community in Koyasan, Japan, who loved him like a brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and diane.
