Ugandan Foundation Offers Free Eye Care in Rural Bukedea, Honoring Philanthropist
Bukedea, Uganda – A three-day free eye care camp is set to launch at Bukedea Teaching Hospital on March 27, offering critical vision services to residents of eastern and northern Uganda. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ruparelia Foundation, aims to screen over 2,000 people and perform hundreds of cataract surgeries, including procedures for children.
The camp is a tribute to the late Rajiv Ruparelia, a businessman and philanthropist remembered for his dedication to community development and empowering Uganda’s youth. Organizers say the outreach embodies his vision of service and lasting compassion.
Rural communities in Uganda often lack access to specialized eye care, contributing to preventable blindness and diminished productivity. Cataracts and uncorrected refractive errors are leading causes of vision impairment, particularly in underserved districts like Bukedea. According to health experts, interventions like this are vital to restoring dignity and opportunity.
The Ruparelia Foundation, established by Sudhir and Jyotsna Ruparelia, has a long history of investing in health, education, and community programs throughout Uganda. Foundation leadership emphasized their commitment to “practical, results-driven philanthropy that directly touches lives.”
The medical camp will offer comprehensive eye screenings, treatment for common eye conditions, and free corrective glasses in addition to cataract surgeries. Medical teams comprised of ophthalmologists, nurses, and support staff will collaborate with local health officials to ensure effective operations and follow-up care.
A launch event is planned in Kampala prior to the start of the medical camp. Stakeholders highlight the importance of public-private partnerships and corporate social responsibility in bridging healthcare gaps, especially in rural areas where needs are greatest.
