Nicaragua Faces Scrutiny Over Detention of Indigenous Leader, Brooklyn Rivera

Managua, Nicaragua – International concern is mounting over the prolonged detention of Brooklyn Rivera, an Indigenous leader in Nicaragua, with Amnesty International demanding authorities provide proof he is alive and respecting his rights. The case highlights a broader crackdown on dissent within the Central American nation, raising alarms among human rights organizations.

Rivera’s whereabouts and condition have remained unknown, fueling fears for his safety. Astrid Valencia, Deputy Director of Research for the Americas at Amnesty International, stated, “Keeping Brooklyn Rivera in detention without information about his whereabouts and state of health, and without access to family members or lawyers, exacerbates the already extremely serious human rights violations he is facing. The Nicaraguan authorities have an obligation to demonstrate without delay that he is alive and to ensure that his rights are fully respected.”

The lack of transparency surrounding Rivera’s case is not isolated, according to Amnesty International. The organization points to a systemic pattern of repression under the government of Daniel Ortega, characterized by the dismantling of independent media, the forced exile of journalists and activists, and the criminalization of those who voice opposition.

“The lack of transparency regarding Brooklyn Rivera’s detention confirms a wider pattern of repression against Indigenous leaders, critical voices and civil society organisations in Nicaragua,” Valencia added. “He and all those detained solely for exercising their human rights must be released immediately and unconditionally.”

A recent report from the Mechanism for the Recognition of Political Prisoners indicates at least 46 individuals are currently detained in Nicaragua for political reasons, suggesting Rivera’s case is part of a larger trend of systematic persecution. The government’s actions demonstrate a continued effort to silence dissent and consolidate control through intimidation.

The situation in Nicaragua has drawn international condemnation, with concerns escalating over the erosion of democratic freedoms and the targeting of vulnerable groups, including Indigenous communities. Amnesty International continues to call for the immediate and unconditional release of Rivera and all other prisoners of conscience held in Nicaragua.
