Indian Vessels Stranded in Persian Gulf Amid Regional Tensions
New Delhi – Twenty-eight Indian-flagged vessels, carrying a total of 778 seafarers, are currently affected by the heightened maritime tensions in the Persian Gulf, Indian officials confirmed Wednesday. The situation is being closely monitored by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, with efforts underway to ensure the safety of the ships and their crews.
According to Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, 24 vessels are positioned on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, carrying 677 seafarers. An additional four vessels, with 101 personnel onboard, are located on the eastern side.
The announcement comes as international concerns grow over escalating instability in the West Asia region. Indian authorities are coordinating with ship managers, recruitment agencies, and local embassies to provide support and, if necessary, medical assistance to those onboard.
“We are monitoring all the vessels actively for their safety and security,” Sinha stated during a media briefing. He added that regular communication with industry stakeholders is being maintained to provide assistance.
The Directorate General of Shipping has issued advisories directing all Indian vessels and seafarers to enhance security measures and adhere to strict reporting protocols, including real-time location updates.
Indian ports remain operational, with major facilities implementing continuous monitoring of vessel movements and assessing regional developments. Dedicated 24-hour control rooms have been established within the Ministry and the DG of Shipping to manage the situation.
The Ministry is also in contact with ship owners and seafarer assemblies to provide timely updates and assistance. Ports have been instructed to support exporters and maintain the flow of international trade.
This situation underscores the vulnerability of maritime commerce in the Persian Gulf, a critical waterway for global energy supplies and trade. The Indian government’s proactive monitoring and coordination efforts reflect the importance it places on protecting its citizens and economic interests in the region.
