Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Dies, Iran Braces for Leadership Transition Amidst Escalating Tensions
TEHRAN, Iran – Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader for over three decades, has died, Iranian state media confirmed Sunday. The announcement follows a reported joint U.S.-Israeli operation, dubbed “Epic Fury” by the Pentagon and “Roaring Lion” by Israel, involving hundreds of aircraft and cruise missiles targeting 500 sites across the country, including Khamenei’s compound in Tehran. U.S. President Donald Trump had declared Khamenei’s death hours earlier, suggesting it presented Iranians with their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.
The death of the 86-year-old cleric, who assumed the leadership in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, creates a significant power vacuum within the Islamic Republic. Khamenei held ultimate authority over all major policies.
Adding to the turmoil, reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei, the Ayatollah’s son and a potential successor, has also been killed, described by some sources as “eliminated.” He was widely considered the most influential of the Ayatollah’s sons. His death could potentially open the door for a successor with different priorities than his father.
Iranian officials have announced the formation of an interim committee to govern the country while a new Supreme Leader is determined. The committee is comprised of Iran’s president, the head of the judiciary, and a member of the Guardian Council, selected by the Expediency Council. Iranian law mandates that the Assembly of Experts will appoint a new Supreme Leader “as soon as possible.”
The current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, and hard-line judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei are among those on the interim council.
The situation is further complicated by escalating regional tensions. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has threatened to launch its “most intense offensive operation” ever, targeting Israel and U.S. bases in the region.
The reported strikes also resulted in the deaths of other family members, including Khamenei’s daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild, with reports suggesting one of his daughters-in-law also perished.
Iran will observe 40 days of mourning for the late Supreme Leader. The succession process is expected to be closely watched internationally, given the potential for significant shifts in Iran’s domestic and foreign policies.
